Sumter County Correctional Institution is a medium security prison located in Americus Georgia. The facility opened in 1990 and has the capability of housing up to 350 male inmates. Offenders are housed in seven open dormitories, each containing forty-four beds, additionally two dormitories contain 14 segregation cells.
While incarcerated at Sumter Correctional Institution, inmates can participate in work activities that include maintaining the facility and grounds, as well as working on road crews. In addition to work activities, incarcerated individuals can learn vocational skills that include carpentry, heavy equipment operation, custodial engineering, and can even train as a firefighter. Adult basic education courses, and the ability to earn a GED are available. Substance abuse and pre-release counseling is also provided at Sumter County Correctional Facility.
