Smith State Prison opened in 1993 and is situated in Glennville, Georgia within Tattnall County. It is a secure facility designed to house around 1,615 adult male inmates. This prison specializes in managing individuals who have displayed challenging behaviors in other facilities. Inmates reside in various accommodations such as open dormitories with double bunk beds, triple offender cells, and double offender cells.
At Smith State Prison, inmates have the opportunity to pursue educational programs like earning a GED, adult basic education, and literacy courses. Additionally, offenders can participate in vocational training through the correctional industries program, which includes activities like creating custom signs, obtaining A+ certification, learning building and industrial maintenance, landscaping, culinary arts, clerical skills, beekeeping, computer repair, and electrical systems. The facility also offers worship/prayer services and bible study through the Chaplain's office.
Inmates are housed within 16 general population units, some of which house two inmates per cell, other house three inmates per cell.
