North Central Correctional Institution is located in Gardner Massachusetts and is a medium security prison that has the capacity to house up to 1,013 adult male offenders of medium and minimum custody levels. Over half of the inmate population at NCCI are sex offenders awaiting transfer to the treatment center, or have completed treatment/or have opted out of the intensive sex offender treatment.
This facility offers a variety of housing unit styles, with the east side and west side serving as distinct areas. On the east side, a building houses five units across three levels with different wings. One wing is dedicated to the Residential Treatment Unit (RTU), while another wing accommodates health care operations and a small medical unit. There are also individual rooms for dog handlers and small dormitory-style housing. The east side includes a restrictive housing unit with single occupancy cells, as well as a school building with classrooms, a chapel, a barbershop, and treatment offices.
The West side features five housing units and work/program areas. Two units provide dormitory housing on both the main and upper floors, with the basement housing the counselor's office, inmate phones, and showers. Another building on the west side offers dormitory-style accommodation with officer stations and recreation areas in the middle. This side also serves as the orientation unit for new arrivals and those transitioning from restrictive housing.
Additional facilities on the west side include a dormitory unit with open dormitory settings and double bunks, a building housing general population inmates and the facility library, and a small special management unit. The kitchen and dining area, as well as the facility laundry, gym, and correctional industry buildings, are also located on this side.
The facility provides a wide range of programs for inmates, such as National Education for Assistant Dog Services (NEADS), American Veterans in Prison, and Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Educational and vocational programs include adult basic education, wheelchair repair, welding, computer skills, ServSafe, and culinary arts. Inmates can also participate in activities like gardening/farming, with produce grown is donated to the local community. Work detail includes a full scale eyewear laboratory.
