MCI Norfolk is a medium security prison that opened in 1927. It can accommodate up to 1,473 adult males, making it the largest prison in Massachusetts. The facility is enclosed by a five thousand-foot-long, nineteen-foot-high wall for security. Additionally, there is a minimum security unit with eighteen dormitory-like living units.
Inmates at Norfolk have the opportunity to participate in various rehabilitation programs, including an alternatives to violence program which focuses on conflict resolution skills and an emotional awareness and healing program promoting emotional and spiritual responsibility. Inmates can also access vocational programs in barbering, culinary arts and dog training. Educational courses, as well as classes on parenting and substance abuse are also available. Work opportunities include working in a chemical shop, a welding shop, a clothing print shop, and a metal shop.
