Description of Facility

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital Correctional Unit is a secure medical facility that houses male and female inmates in Massachusetts. Considered a medium security unit, Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is responsible for providing medical care, and can accommodate up to 24 in-patient and up to 100 out-patient inmates at any given time. The facility is named after Lemuel Shattuck who developed the foundations for the first Board of Health in the Nation. His report, the Shattuck Report, dates back to 1850, and exemplified the importance of having a compiled statistical record of health and living conditions and the need for health codes to keep a population healthy.

Visiting Hours & Information

In order to visit an inmate in Massachusetts you must do the following:

  • First, request the inmate add you to their prospective visitors list.
  • Next, complete a Massachusetts inmate visitors application. The application is also available in Spanish.
  • Complete and sign the form, then mail the application back to the facility your inmate is located in.
  • You will be notified of the status of your application, approved or denied.
  • Once approved you should familiarize yourself with the rules/dress code.
  • When attending a visit, you must provide a valid government issued photo identification such as a driver's license or passport.

Saturday and Sunday:
1:30pm-2:30pm
3:30pm-7:30pm

Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday:
6:00pm-8:00pm

Important things to remember when visiting an inmate at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital Correctional Unit:

  • You and your vehicle may be searched, weapons and drugs are prohibited from being on facility grounds including in your vehicle.
  • The Unit is located on the eighth floor on the North side of the building.
  • Only a single visit per week is allowed and only if the inmate has been at the unit for over 21 days.
  • The maximum number of visitors is two, including minors.
  • Visits are one hour in duration.
  • All visitors should use the bathroom before entering the unit, if you are in a visit and need to use the restroom the visit will terminate.
