Jefferson County Correctional Institution opened in 1925 and currently houses up to 190 medium security inmates who have committed felonies and misdemeanors in the county. The facility is comprised of eight dormitories that house residents. Inmates are provided with work detail in local county maintenance, and working in sanitation and construction units. Vocational programs include learning to operate heavy equipment, plumbing, welding, and masonry. Additionally, residents can receive substance abuse treatment and a general education while incarcerated.
