Columbus Transitional Center opened in 2005 and is a minimum security prison that houses up to 182 inmates. This facility specializes in preparing inmates for release by helping residents develop social skills, and personal work ethic. Residents are houses in two open bay dormitories, and those on work release are housed in multiple occupancy cells. Work release allows inmate an opportunity to leave the facility during work hours to report to a job in the surrounding community.

Georgia Department of Corrections requires all visitors complete a visitors application and be approved before visiting. Start by doing the following:
- All visitors regardless of age must fill out a visitors application.
- You must gather and submit a copy of all the documents required in the application, this includes a valid government issued photo ID.
- The application must be completed, signed and notarized.
