Description of Facility

Bridgewater State Hospital opened in 1855, and has undergone various changes over it's controversial history. This facility houses the criminally insane, and is also responsible for evaluating inmates for the Massachusetts Department of Correction. This facility was controversial in the 1960's due to facility conditions and illegal commitments which essentially held inmates well beyond their original sentence. A documentary called Titicut Follies was produced in 1967 that portrays what the residents of Bridgewater State Hospital endured. In 2016 Bridgewater State hospital changed the way it manages inmates, adopting a clinical approach to treating offenders.

Visiting Hours & Information

In order to visit an inmate in Massachusetts you must do the following:

  • First, request the inmate add you to their prospective visitors list.
  • Next, complete a Massachusetts inmate visitors application. The application is also available in Spanish.
  • Complete and sign the form, then mail the application back to the facility your inmate is located in.
  • You will be notified of the status of your application, approved or denied.
  • Once approved you should familiarize yourself with the rules/dress code.
  • When attending a visit, you must provide a valid government issued photo identification such as a driver's license or passport.

1:30pm-9:00pm

Monday and Tuesday:
4:00pm-9:00pm
(Closed 5:30pm-7:00pm on the first Monday each month)

Friday:
4:00pm-9:00pm

Saturday:
9:00am-12:00pm
1:30pm-4:00pm
