Western Correctional Institution opened in 1996, and is currently a maximum security prison. Even though it is designated as maximum security, Western Correctional Institution also houses minimum and pre-release offenders who provide supervised labor for jobs located outside of the perimeter fence. Currently this facility can house a maximum of 1,753 adult male inmates.
Residents of Western Correctional Institution can participate in the Correctional Enterprise program that employs inmates in building furniture items, and operating an industrial laundry plant. Vocational classes provided to inmates include welding, cabinet making, millwork, graphic arts, industrial printing, and facility maintenance. Additional programs include substance abuse recovery, the VetDog program, and a horticulture program.
