Patuxent Institution opened in 1955 and is located in Jessup Maryland. This facility has a maximum capacity of 1,200, and houses both male and female inmates. The facility is considered maximum security. Residents range in security levels from medium to acute mentally ill. General population inmates are mostly double bunked, while segregation and mental health inmates are housed in single occupancy cells. Additionally, Patuxent Institution houses offenders in B Unit in a dormitory setting.
While incarcerated, eligible inmates can be employed in the Maryland Correctional Enterprise program, which runs a sign shop, a sublimation shop. Additional work details include working in sanitation, maintenance, and in tutoring.
