Maryland Correctional Institution for Women opened in 1936, and has the distinction of being the only facility that houses maximum, medium, minimum, and pre-release female inmates. The maximum capacity of this facility is 850.
Maryland Correctional Institution is comprised of three buildings that contain housing units, A building, B building, and Building 192. A building contains two pods with 112 double bunked beds in each pod and is home to the American's Vet Dog program. B building contains two pods (B East and B West) with 112 double bunked beds and houses the Rescue Cat Association. Building 192 is the oldest unit and is made up of 4 wings, A, B, C, and D.
