Maryland Correctional Institution Hagerstown was built in 1942 and is a medium security prison. The designed capacity for this institution is 1,300 adult male offenders. This facility is unique in that it was entirely constructed by inmates using stone from local quarries. Currently this institution has 22 inmate housing units, three of which are single cell units, nine are open dormitory style, nine are multiple occupancy cells, and one is segregation cells.
While incarcerated at MCI Hagerstown, residents can work in several of the prison industries including in metal shops, an upholstery shop, metal fabrication, and in laundry. These jobs help supply things like metal inmate beds and desks.
