Barbra Ester Unit is a minimum and medium security prison located in Jefferson County Arkansas. It can house up to 579 male inmates. Closed for renovation until 2015, Ester Unit provides programs for inmates that include re-entry preparation, veterans programs, career technology computer programs, an advanced principles and applications for life course, and the ability to earn a GED.
This facility is named after a fallen correctional Sgt. Barbara Ester who was fatally stabbed by an inmate in 2012, she was only 46 at the time and was collecting a pair of unauthorized shoes when the incident occurred.
