San Quentin State Prison has a capacity to house 4,885 male inmates. The facility houses minimum to maximum security inmates, in addition it houses inmates who have been condemned to death. San Quentin State Prison is divided into sub-facilities: A, B which house North Block, North Segregation, South Block, East Block , West Block and the Adjustment Center. South Block is divided into sub blocks Alpine, Badger, Carson and Donner Units.
Certain inmates at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center are allowed to work in the Prison Industry Authority earing a wage working in construction labor, health facility maintenance, a furniture shop, and in mattress manufacturing. Academics available include adult basic education and the ability to earn a GED. Vocational courses are provided in computer literacy, plumbing, building maintenance, electronics, and machining.
