Mount Pleasant Correctional Facility was reclassified in 2016 as a minimum security institution, focused on preparing offenders for re-entry into the community. It has a design capacity for 1,080 offenders with an average population of 912.
The 152-acre grounds are maintained by the minimum out offenders. The gardens they tend to produce over 100,000 pounds of food to lower facility costs. Offenders also assist local law enforcement by landscaping and waxing floors. Additional tasks and job responsibilities involve constructing homes for Habitat for Humanity and participating in roadside crews that remove trash and debris.
Through partnerships, offenders can receive education and vocational training. Mt. Pleasant Correctional Facility offers apprenticeships in various skills and collaborates with Iowa Prison Industries. These vocational courses include certifications in forklift operator, basic industrial maintenance, computers, and life skills.
