Kilby Correctional Facility is a mixed custody institution that houses medium to maximum security inmates. Currently, Kilby houses 1267 male offenders on over 150 acres.
The main purpose of this facility is to receive and process all inmates who enter into the prison system, with the exception of youth offenders and inmates who have been sentence to death. This includes evaluating, classifying, and facility assignment. Additional responsibilities of Kilby correctional include providing medical and dental services to inmates. Kilby Correctional also serves as an on-site employee training facility.
Programs offered at this facility include narcotics and alcoholics anonymous, adult education and GED courses, anger management classes, sex offender therapy, as well as individual and group therapy. This correctional institution is considered maximum security because many of he inmates who pass through are unclassified when they first enter, then are evaluated and given an assignment to their more permanent facility based on that classification. Kilby also offers mental health and medical treatment for inmates across Alabama.
When an inmate first arrives at Kilby they will be unable to have visitors, make calls, or receive and send mail. Most inmates will only be housed here for a short period of time until their evaluation and classification is completed, then they will be sent to the appropriate facility. Kilby offers inmates a wide range of programs including substance abuse treatments, anger management, GED educational courses and various group and individual therapies. In addition to receiving inmates, Kilby also processes inmate releases through a pre-release program in which they help prepare offenders for societal re-integration.
