Kentucky State Reformatory opened in 1939, and is located in LaGrange Kentucky, part of Oldham County. It is a medium security prison that houses up to 1,058 adult males making it the second largest correctional facility in the state. The large tower in the center of the picture above is the administration building, it is where staff offices, a hospital and living quarters for some staff are located.
The facility has five inmate living units - Unit A, Unit B, Unit C, Unit D, and Unit E. Unit A houses inmates assigned to work details and a dog training program. Unit B has a Nursing Care Facility and Dorm 10 for inmates with medical needs. Unit C houses inmates with medical needs and severe mental illness. Unit D is the Temporary Holding Unit, and Unit E is the Correctional Psychiatric Treatment Unit with specialized programming for mentally ill inmates. The facility provides extensive mental health and medical services, including on-site chemotherapy and dialysis treatments.
Kentucky State Reformatory has a variety of educational, vocational and treatment programs designed to aid in the inmates rehabilitation. Offenders can earn a GED and receive an adult basic education while incarcerated. In addition inmates can attend various programs including substance abuse treatment, Alcoholics Anonymous, parenting classes, anger management, sex offender treatment, and moral reconation therapy.
