The Iowa Medical and Classification Center (IMCC) in Coralville houses around 950 offenders daily and serves as the reception and classification center for new commitments entering the adult male institutional corrections system. IMCC offers a range of services, including a medium security general population unit and a licensed forensic psychiatric hospital. Additional medical and psychiatric beds were added in 2007 to address the growing mental health needs of the correctional population. The facility has undergone expansions and renovations over the years to accommodate the increasing capacity and provide specialized care. IMCC also established the first Prison Hospice Program in Iowa in 2002, known as Project HOPE, to offer end-of-life services with dignity and support for terminally ill offenders. Trained Hospice offender volunteers play a crucial role in providing comfort care to those in need.
