Florida State Prison opened in 1960 and confines the highest and most dangerous inmates in the state of Florida. This facility is where death row inmates are housed and executed. Florida State Prison has three close management levels, level one is the most restrictive and houses inmates in a single cell setting. Level three is the lease restrictive housing. The maximum capacity is 1,460 male inmates.
Florida State Prison has a level called Maximum management, which is reserved for inmates who are considered an extreme security risk and require a level of control beyond what confinement, death row, or close management can offer.
This facility also operates a satellite facility known as Florida State Prison West Unit, however it is temporarily closed.
