Originally this facility was known as West Jefferson. In the 1990's a correctional officer named William Donaldson was killed by an inmate. In honor of the fallen correctional officer, the facility was renamed Donaldson Correctional Facility. Donaldson Correctional currently houses over 1400 male inmates in a maximum security environment. This facility contains the largest segregation population in Alabama with the capacity to house up to 300 inmates in their segregation unit. Additionally, this facility has a Death Row Unit with a capacity of 24 offenders.
Vocational programs, educational GED programs, and various rehabilitation programs are available to inmates at Donaldson. Vocational programs include carpentry, electrical, HVAC and barbering.
You may recognize this facility from a 2008 documentary called "The Dhamma Brothers" which highlights a meditation program that was available at the facility.
