The Chesapeake Detention Facility, located in Baltimore was built in 1986, and opened in 1988 as a super-maximum security prison for Maryland's most violent offenders and to those sentenced to death. In 2010, a significant partnership was established with the United States Marshal’s Service. Currently, CDF houses Federal male and female inmates aged 18-50 in various trial stages, with security levels ranging from minimum to maximum.
The facility's designed capacity is 569. There are 36 segregation cells. Chesapeake Detention Facility can accommodate 22 female inmates. The average inmate stay is around one year, depending on their court case. The facility consists of six housing units (A-F) separated by safety vestibules and security doors. Each unit has three columns, two levels, and four quads with twelve cells each. All cells are double occupancy, with sliding doors, windows, and food slots.
